Induction task 1 - Textual analysis

Preacher is about Jesse Custer who is given an ability called genesis,which is supposed to be a weapon that escaped from heaven and it lets the main character (Jesse Custer) command anyone to do anything that he wants against their will.


“Preacher” starts with recaps and flashbacks with a fast cutting rate to show the intense, dark tone of the tv show and it is then followed by a jump cut of the main character (Jesse Custer) who is a hostage and being forced to answer a question. It is shot as a close up to show his facial features like emotion,the first part of the jump cut shows the MC emotions,then a shot of the swamp and then the second part shows the reaction to the question.This can be a good effect rather than having no cuts which gives a simplistic look.It also has dialogue and ambient sound of machinery in the background and also a non diegetic sound is included which sounds eerie which invests the watchers interest. It also adds suspense.It then has an establishing shot of a swamp as the MC is resubmerged for not answering the question.


It then cuts to another establishing shot of “Preacher’s” rendition of hell,there is a hoop with one basketball which is flat,Hitler is there,everyone is in light green jumpsuits(mise en scene) in a light green room,a connotation of this is that hell is not all fun and games.
It then cuts to a new scene,it is a mid shot of the MC,he is dressed in a dirty suit which connotes he is not wealthy and does not live the luxurious lifestyle.It then cuts to an establishing shot of the hot desert land of texas.


He is scamming people.He stole a wallet full of money and then a close up showed his reaction and then the money which can be a prop is shown as well and gives a visceral feeling because of the amount.
It shifts to reverse shots as a conversation showing that a conversation is being held, the camera goes back and forth as they speak it then transitions to a longshot as the car sits there and it gives an ambient sound which is the car running in the background as the two characters speak.


The shots have a fast cutting rate when a conversation is held and some shots are handheld so it looks like the audience is there with or it can be argued that it is the character's point of view,what they are seeing.

Prison break Analysis

Prison Break Notes It starts off with the Protagonist/MC getting a tattoo but they don’t show the tattoo which means it may play a part in what is to come so they keep it very secretive. Then the MC plans to rob a bank but his intentions are to get caught so he doesn't resist arrest. He wants to break his brother out because he was set up for the murder of a politician and has a death sentence. During his first day in his cell he sees someone stabbed and watches them bleed in horror, he is not accustomed for this life and it is clear he is doing this out of love for his brother. Also while he is prison he has flashbacks of when he was getting the tattoos of the prison architecture so he can break his brother out, also shows flashbacks of him planning how to escape. Its is not in chronological order because of the way it has been produced, it shows his past then the future instead of starting from the beginning. Shocking Day Analysis

Textual analysis The advert starts off with the little girl blowing out her candle, from these props we can infer that it is her birthday and she is spending it with her Mum and Dad. Also at the beginning the natural lighting is very bright and the mood is very cheery. She is surrounded people she knows and loves this changes towards the end because she is surround by the complete opposite.she starts off as such a kindred spirit then she her spirits drop to dull faces. From the location from one of the screenshots i can tell that it is London by the skyscraper which looks like a tall dome and also you can tell by her accent as well. At the beginning her appearance is that of a healthy,happy young girl wearing nice looking clothes. When the chaos starts she starts wearing sometimes the same clothes but they have holes and rips in them and her hair starting to fall out, it could be stress related because of the war or it could be radiation poisoning because later in the video
